2. History of significant alcohol/ drug misuse
Does the perpetrator have a history of substance misuse? Research indicates a link
between substance misuse and DV. Substance misuse can lead to conflict in a relationship
but can also enable a DV perpetrator to excuse his behaviour.
3. History of mental ill health issues
While not all adults who experience mental ill health will become perpetrators of DV,
research shows that having a history of serious mental ill health can lead to irrational
behaviour which can include DV.
4. History of Criminality
People with a history of criminality and in particular violent crime may hold attitudes
condoning violence including Domestic Violence.
5. History of concern regarding the children of this family
Repeat referrals re: children. Children who are not achieving academically, not able
concentrate at school. Children who evidence developmental delay, regressive behaviours
such as soiling when toilet trained. Children who experience sleep disturbance. Children
who are aggressive, unable to make or keep friends. (DVRAC)
Schools are beginning to roll out a specialist project Operation Encompass which will provide
them with additional means of intervening to support children who may be exposed to
domestic violence at home.
